Plot summary

In 1707, after the death of Aurangzeb the Mughal empire unraveled. The Marathas, Afghans and Brits fought for power. In 1764, after the battle of Buzar, the Brits were in control of Awadh and Bengal.In the late 18th century Bundelkhand, post the Buxar war, a sagacious and disturbed bounty hunter Gossain, a Naga Sadhu (Saif Ali Khan), aided by his sidekick, goes on a killing spree and travels in a quest to find and kill his arch nemesis Rehmat Khan. Gossain gets word from whore Noor Bai (Sonakshi Sinha), who gives him a bounty for Rehmat Khan (for slashing her face), and also gives Gossain his address. Gossain is in turn being hunted by some soldiers guided by human tracker (Deepak Dobriyal).The tracker leads the afghans to Gossain, who kills them all, but is injured in the process.Rahmat Khan (Manav Vij) was Subedar (Treasurer) of Rohilkhand from 1749 to 1774. He was Pashtun by background. During the Third Battle of Panipat in 1761, Rahmat Khan paired with Najibullah and fought against the Marathas led by Sadashivrao Bhau. Rohilkhand lost and was supposed to pay an yearly royalty to Marathas. Rohilkhand paid, but lapsed after a few yrs. When Marathas approached, the King of Rohilkhand arranged his gold, But Rahmat Khan killed everyone in the fort and escaped with his family and the treasury gold. Adam Khan (Aamir Bashir) is Rehmat's general.Gossain reaches Rohilkhand, only to find the fort abandoned and all inhabitants massacred. He goes unconscious from his wounds and is cared by The Widow (Zoya Hussain), who was also the Concubine of Rehmat Khan. The widow wants to travel with Gossain and help him track Rahmat, but Gossain discourages her. But the Widow still follows her.Meanwhile the human tracker reaches Rohilkhand, only to be arrested by the Marathas. He makes a deal with Sadashivrao to track down Rahmat Khan. Meanwhile Gossain and the Widow are going around in circles. Gossain comes across a band of Naga sadhus, who point him in the right direction to a town where Rahmat might attempt to cross the Yamuna river to proceed towards Awadh and safety. Gossain tracks down Rahmat and is able to enter his tent at night. However, the widow had betrayed Gossain for the safety of her child, and Gossain is arrested by Rahmat. Rahmat believes Gossain is a Maratha spy. Rahmat is travelling with his begum (Simone Singh) and their newborn infant.Gossain sees Rahmat meeting with Brit soldier Sargent Theodre Munro (Henry Douthwaite) and his platoon. It is revealed that the boy with Rahmat and his wife was born off the widow. The Brits offer guns to Rahmat in exchange for gold and say that if he sides with the Brits against the Marathas, Bundelkhand will belong to Rahmat. While the deal is going down, the Maratha platoon tracks down Rahmat and attacks, but is stopped dead by the brute force of British guns. The Marathas are forced to retreat.The next night, as Rahmat shifts camp, the Marathas get reinforcements from base and attack again. This time the widow uses the confusion to escape camp with her son. Gossain also escapes. The widow is captured and brought back to Rahmat. Rahmat kills his wife when she complains too much about keeping the widow concubine alive who continues to claim ownership of their son. Gossain teams up with the human tracker to find Rahmat before he can cross the Yamuna river and into the safety of Awadh.Gossain remembers that in the battle of Bunxar armies of entire India had gathered to repel the Brits. Sadaullah khan is the leader of the Rohillas and declares that he 2 sons will fight in battle (Rahmat and a 2nd son). The 2nd son is young and a Naga Sadhu agrees to take him under his wings for training. As the battle plans are made, Rahmat betrays them by allowing the Brits into the main tent and getting everyone arrested. Sadaullah and the Naga Sadhu are hanged and the Naga Sadhu asks the 2nd son to avenge his father's death. The 2nd son attacks Rahmat and is hanged in response.As Rahmat prepares to cross the Yamuna, Gossain attacks with the human tracker and captures Rahmat. He takes Rahmat, the Widow and her son to the same place where Sadaullah was hanged. Gossain reveals that he is Rahmat's brother, and Sadaullah's 2nd son. The Naga Sadhu had inserted a rifle shell inside his mouth, due to which his wind pipe was never closed during the hanging and he kept on breathing and escaped death. He was later rescued by a group of Naga Sadhus. Gossain hangs Rahmat and adopts his son.
